DEAF EMPOWERMENT ABROAD FOUNDATION
ADVOCATING THE ADVANCEMENT OF DEAF LIVES
D-E-A-F is a grassroots 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are committed to collaborating with Jamaica as a key ally in creating a supportive environment where Deaf persons are empowered through accessible education, language, and opportunities. We pledge to respect the core values of Deaf individuals and the Deaf communities we serve in Jamaica.
By partnering with Deaf schools and community leaders, D-E-A-F strives to provide valuable resources, opportunities, and meaningful connections that empower both Deaf youth and Adults to embrace their identity.
VISION
D-E-A-F is an entirely volunteer-driven organization. We recognizing the social responsibility to “pay it forward,” and acknowledge Deafness as a cultural identity and emphasize the importance of language accessibility. Through skilled volunteers with professional and personal experience, our organization provides essential resources to support the advancement of Deaf lives and communities.
D-E-A-F collaborates closely with Deaf Jamaica community leaders to stay informed about pressing issues and ensure ongoing support for critical concerns. The organization takes action by offering resources of empowerment to underserved Deaf communities in Jamaica, including schools, workplaces, and other key environments.
RAISING AWARENESS OF DISABILITY ACTS RIGHTS
In 2014, the Jamaica Disability Act was successfully passed, making it a big accomplishment for the disabled community island-wide. However, the law is rarely enforced due to lack of knowledge and understanding of how the act works within the Deaf community. This is quite common in many developing countries where accessibility rights are often ignored and not exercised.
